What is the Teflon or Plastic Sewing Machine Presser Foot ?

When we have simple drag machines, we usually have a problem when sewing materials with plasticized finishes, for example, vinyl, ecocuer, leathers, glass, and even some varnished leathers, as well as when we sew the live plastic to the piece that we want to send.

    Why does this happen ?
It happens because all plasticized materials adhere to metal and sewing machines come from the factory, as the only alternative, the metal foot.

We will try to explain why this happens and how this problem can be solved or improved!

We must know that all machines bring a feed, yes or yes, whether it is industrial, family or pedal, that feed is the toothed piece, at the bottom, we can place it under the foot of the presser foot, this feed is essential, as which is what synchronously stretches the fabric or the material you are sewing and makes the stitch even, but for many materials this drag only is insufficient, especially as we mentioned at the beginning in plasticized materials.

How do I know that the problem is the foot?

Very easy, you will notice it in several aspects, for example:
When joining a wrapped front, with the bellows, you will have plenty of the latter, despite having made a perfect mold, well calculated and measured, you will notice this defect.
This happens because the live plastic adheres to the metal foot and this causes a brake, while the lower feed teeth stretch normally, this forms small wrinkles in the part that touches the feed teeth, imperceptible for those who have no experience. , but that at the end of the piping seam, this piece is therefore smaller than the size of the original piece of the mold, this will be noticed at the moment of joining with the bellows.

Another very common symptom is in the seam of the backstitch, you will notice a difference in the stitch length, that is, you will see that at times it is adequate and in others it becomes smaller, sometimes to very small sizes, the reason is the The material itself adheres to the metal foot.

It will also be difficult for you to make leathers straps, it tends to be similar to a serpentine.

Another feature that allows us to realize this problem is that many times in the lower part of the piece that you are sewing, especially when you are stitching in a medium thick part, you will notice a scratch, that is, the feed teeth mark and they scrape the lower piece, this happens because the teeth try to stretch or drag normally and the metal foot offers resistance causing this damage to the piece you are sewing.

How can you solve or alleviate this problem and sew this type of material calmly?
The best solution is to have a machine with compound feed, that is, better known as double feed or triple feed, this type of machine drags the pieces both in the lower part by the feed teeth, and in the upper part by the foot, since this has the movement synchronized with the lower drag, which makes a perfect drag.

But if you do not have this type of machine, do not despair, as our premise is that nothing should stop us, if you have a simple drag industrial straight machine, you can improve it significantly, changing the conventional metal foot, for a Teflon foot. or also known as a silicone foot, this will make the plasticized material slide more easily and you will be able to avoid the problems mentioned above.

This type of foot not only comes as a common or conventional foot, but also as a foot for the stitching of the piping, as can be seen in the images in the photograph.

    Teflon Presser Foot Code :

One last tip, if possible, avoid overdoing the seam, that is, ensure that there is always fabric between the lower teeth and the Teflon foot, this will prevent the bottom drag, when working directly against the Teflon foot, causes wear to it, shortening its useful life !!
