The most basic distinctions are 3:
Sharp needles, Ball Point (Some know them as ballpoint) and Universal
Sharp Point Needles : Penetrates fabrics without generating too much friction. Examples of these needles are Schmetz's Microtex for sewing in straight stitch and on all types of fabrics and upper stitches, which are used for fabrics with fine fabrics or extremely dense at the other end.
Ball or Ballpoint Tip:
They are specially designed for woven fabrics, so this needle will pass between the loops of a fabric without undoing it, for elastic fabrics, avoid giving false stitches or stretching too much. Here we find Janome's Ballpoints.
Universal: For all types of fabrics, the tip of the universal needle is sharp and slightly rounded, leaving neat and uniform finishes on all types of fabrics, if you see that you are not happy with the result you will have to decide between the other two types.
Within each of these categories the tips of the needles have different acronyms as follows:
Shovel Tip (S): shaped like a lens and parallel to the seam.
Pearl Tip (P or NW): shaped like a lens and perpendicular to the seam.
Diamond Point (Di or Dia): shaped like a rhombus. Among them we find the LL, which are sharp needles generally used to sew leather.
Normal Round Tip (R): for sewing all types of fabrics.
Sharp Round Tip (SPI): for dense fabrics.
Small Ball Point (SES): for lightweight or low weight fabrics.
Medium Ball Point (SUK): for medium weight fabrics.
Ball Point (SKF): for thick woven fabrics or thick stretch fabric.
Special Ball Point (SKL): for thick elastic fabrics covered with elastromeric thread and very thick fabrics.
